CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY | 7th September
The urgency to act on climate change has never been greater, and the broad permaculture movement offers many solutions and vitally important approaches. But how do we get them widely adopted, and how do we counter the blocking forces of big oil, big money, and big ignorance? Where are the pressure points, and how do we use our resources most effectively? In this workshop we will apply strategy tools used by activists to these questions, and do a ‘site analysis’ of the issue. We’ll also hear a report on the work of the Permaculture Climate Change Solutions group formed at the IPC in England in September of 2015, and discuss how we can move forward.

Too often, people of color, immigrants, and communities most impacted by environmental and social injustice are underrepresented in permaculture courses, gatherings and leadership. How do we meaningfully build alliances, stand in solidarity with one another, and address deep issues of power and privilege? When we are organizing and facilitating, how do we hold a container for the pain of the oppressed and shift the guilt and denial of the privileged into empowerment and responsibility? Join Pandora Thomas of the Black Permaculture Network and Starhawk of Earth Activist Training to share experiences, challenges, and lessons of alliance-building.

PERMACULTURE AND SPIRIT | 9th September
Some of the founders of the permaculture movement have tried hard to establish permaculture as a science and to steer clear of any spiritual or religious affiliations. Yet for many people, a spiritual foundation is a vital part of sustaining the work of earth healing and regeneration. People of European descent often yearn for a spiritual connection separate from dogma and church, and look for it in indigenous or Eastern spirituality. But there is a rich tradition of European, earth-based spirituality rooted in traditional healing, herbalism, and land-use practices. Starhawk will share some of her own journey into these ancient traditions and their contemporary revival, and share how ceremony and celebration can inform our permaculture teaching and practice in ways that are inclusive, respectful, and empowering. We will close with a short ritual—a spiral dance.
